Barriers to Change in Community and Workplace Design: Implementing climate-positive initiatives in workplaces and communities often meets resistance, but this resistance is rarely an individual failure. Instead, it stems from deeply interconnected social, environmental, and economic systems. In this session, Lisa Whited explores these systemic barriers through the lens of Donella Meadows’ systems thinking, identifying leverage points that can drive meaningful change.

Drawing on Margaret Mead’s anthropological insights, Whited will examine how cultural narratives shape perceptions of sustainability, often reinforcing the status quo. Additionally, Deborah Tannen’s research on communication styles will highlight how gender dynamics influence organizational responses to climate action. By understanding these factors, organizations can foster inclusive dialogue, overcome misconceptions, and create shared visions for transformative change.

Through community engagement and strategic reframing, leaders can shift mindsets, build resilience, and drive climate-forward design solutions that benefit both people and the planet.
